Title: First Aid Report

By : 12th Kuala Lumpur Boys Brigade

The first day of the course (30/7) we were separated into 2 groups one was alpha the other beta. Each class had different instructors; my class (beta) had Mr Sam. He was a very interesting instructor , reason being he would always make jokes and would tell us stories of when he was still new about first aid.

On the first day we learned about the definition of first aid, how to be an effective first aider, and why we do first aid. The definition of being a good first aider was to initiate assistance or treatment given to the person. To be a good first aider we need to be calm, be aware of risk, always ask if it's too dangerous to oneself, give early treatment and to remember your own needs. The reason we do first aid is to preserve life, prevent from further injury and to promote recovery by making arrangements to the hospital.

The other things we learned was the assessments. It was to check casualty’s condition by doing primary and secondary assessment. Primary assessment is to check responsiveness and vital signs of the casualty by doing D.R.S.A.B.C which stands for Danger Response Shout Airway Breathing Compression. The secondary assessment is called Head to Toe. This assessment is to check for broken bones, spinal injuries and bleeding ; look for external clues and to check for casualty’s history like I.D .

We also learned on how to do CPR the proper way. There are 2 things that need to be done when during CPR was External Chest Compression and External Artificial Compression. You have 2 minutes to do 30 compressions and 2 blows for 5 cycles, straight . If victim does not breath keep repeating the cycle. If not put the victim into recovery position.

On the second day we learned about different types of wounds, how to differentiate dressing and bandages, types of fracture ,and how to properly handle and lift a victim. There are 7 types of wounds. Stab Wound, Puncture Wound, Gun Shot Wound, Abrasion, Contusion, Laceration, and Incised Wound

The difference between a dressing and a bandage is that a dressing is something that covers the wound, helps control bleeding ,and protects against germ. Compared to bandages they are more of a support, it holds the dressing in place , controls bleeding, helps support and immobilize the wound ,and it prevents and reduces swelling for the wound.

For handling and lifting the victim we have to Make sure we have a safe grip to make sure that the victim doesn't slip or fall during the lifting. Make sure back is straight, so that the victim doesn't suffer from anymore head injuries or spinal injuries. Make sure knees are bent and utilize strong muscles, so that you can carry the victim with ease. Feet apart , it is to have a stronger base support for carrying the victim. Lastly, Call for help, so that the victim has immediate transport to the hospital.

Overall this has been a very enjoyable course and hope more people will come and join this course the next time.
