Praise Camp 2017 Report
By: Corporal Zander Cheah Wei-Han
Day One
On 23rd June 2017, the Worship Department of the 12th Kuala Lumpur Boys’ Brigade Company organized a Praise Camp at Methodist College Kuala Lumpur. The campers arrived at the venue at 4:45 p.m. and deposited their luggage and bags in room R412. We started with a short icebreaker session at 5:00 p.m. led by Corporal Zander Cheah in room R411.
Our speaker, Mr Denis Kan, arrived at 5:15 p.m.. After brief introductions, we started our first session about general and particular worship. General is how our will and emotions apply to worship and particular worship is how our acts like singing, prayer, reading and listening to scripture are also acts of worship to God.

After our first session, we were given time to eat dinner and wash up. At 8:15 p.m., we were led by Staff Sergeant Ong Wil Sern and Corporal Zander Cheah into a time of worship through songs in the Chapel.
After that, our second session for this camp commenced at 8:30 p.m. about acceptable and unacceptable worship. We were taught, with reference to scripture, the wrong and right ways of worship. We finished the session at 10:00 p.m. and ended the day with singing the BB Vesper.
The camp participants either went down to the canteen for supper or proceeded to room R412 to clean up. At 11:00 p.m., we retired for the night.
Day Two
The campers woke up at 6:00 a.m.. We then proceeded to the basketball court for our morning exercise led by Corporal Zander Cheah. We finished at about 6:15 a.m. and headed to room R412 to freshen up. At 7:00 a.m., we devoted some time to God and to read scripture. This session was led by Staff Sergeant Ong Wil Sern. At 7:30 a.m., we had breakfast in the canteen.
At 8:00 a.m., the current and new NCOs involved in the Praise Camp went to room R411 to attend the NCO Training conducted by our Company’s officers. The rest of the campers proceeded with songs discussion, band practice then free time led by Staff Sergeant Ong Wil Sern.
At 12:30 p.m., the campers and NCOs of the company joined each other for lunch. Once we finished our lunch, we went to room R411 for our final session of the camp. We started at about 1:15 p.m. as the NCO Training Course ended a little late. Mr Denis talked about the application of music into worship.
At 2:45 p.m., we moved to the chapel for our practical session where we formed small teams and presented one song to Mr Denis and Mr Andrew. This session aimed to give advice to and provide experience for the campers in a band setting. The campers were also advised to put into practice all that was learnt throughout the camp.
We finish at 4:15 p.m. and have a short camp debrief at the chapel. We thanked Mr Denis for availing himself to speak at the camp and gave him a token of appreciation. We were then dismissed and adjourned to clean up the rooms and pack our bags to head home.
Overall, the objectives of this camp were met. Participants were given more exposure to worship inside as well as outside of a musical context with reference to a lot of scripture. The participants also could experience playing or singing in a band setting, especially those who are new to the department.
